How to Make Money on Pinterest with Affiliate Marketing

Lately, I’ve been seeing a lot of content about how to make money on Pinterest with affiliate links, so That's why I wrote this post I wanted to clear up some misconceptions and share the right way to use affiliate links on Pinterest.

Yes, you can use Pinterest marketing to make money with affiliate links—many of my clients do it successfully. However, it’s not a get-rich-quick scheme as some posts might suggest.

Understanding Pinterest and Affiliate Marketing

What is Pinterest?

Pinterest is a visual social media platform where users can discover, save, and share ideas through images and videos. It functions as a virtual pinboard, allowing users to “pin” content they find interesting or useful onto their boards.

Unlike other social media platforms, Pinterest users often have a high intent to purchase, making it an ideal platform for affiliate marketing.

What is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing is a performance-based marketing strategy where an affiliate earns a commission by promoting products or services offered by another company.

When a user clicks on an affiliate link and makes a purchase, the affiliate earns a percentage of the sale. Pinterest's visual nature makes it an excellent platform for showcasing affiliate products and driving traffic to affiliate links.

Setting Up Your Pinterest Account for Success

Optimize Your Profile

Your Pinterest profile is the first impression potential followers will have of you, so it's essential to make it as appealing and professional as possible. Here are some key steps to optimize your profile:

  • Create a Business Account: A Pinterest Business account provides access to valuable analytics and promotional tools that are not available to personal accounts.
  • Craft a Catchy Bio: Write a clear and concise bio that highlights your niche and includes relevant keywords. Make sure to include a call-to-action (CTA) and a link to your website or blog.
  • Choose a Professional Profile Picture: Use a high-quality image that represents your brand. This could be a logo or a professional headshot.
  • Claim Your Website: Claiming your website with Pinterest adds credibility to your profile and unlocks additional features such as Rich Pins.

Create Niche-Specific Boards

Organizing your pins into niche-specific boards makes it easier for users to find the content they're interested in. Here are some tips for creating effective boards:

  • Choose Relevant Board Titles: Use clear and descriptive board titles that include keywords related to your niche.
  • Write Detailed Board Descriptions: Provide detailed descriptions for each board, incorporating relevant keywords to improve search visibility.
  • Pin High-Quality Content: Ensure that the content you pin is high-quality and relevant to your niche. This includes your own content as well as curated content from other sources.

Creating Engaging Content

Design Eye-Catching Pins

Pinterest is a highly visual platform, so creating eye-catching pins is crucial for capturing users' attention. Here are some tips for designing effective pins:

  • Use High-Quality Images: Use high-resolution images that are visually appealing and relevant to your content.
  • Incorporate Text Overlays: Adding text overlays to your pins can make them more informative and engaging. Use clear, legible fonts and contrasting colors to ensure readability.
  • Follow Pinterest's Guidelines: Adhere to Pinterest's recommended pin dimensions (1000 x 1500 pixels) and avoid excessive text or clutter.

Write Compelling Pin Descriptions

Pin descriptions play a crucial role in helping your content get discovered on Pinterest. Here are some tips for writing effective pin descriptions:

  • Use Relevant Keywords: Incorporate relevant keywords naturally into your pin descriptions to improve search visibility.
  • Include a Call-to-Action: Encourage users to take action by including a clear and compelling call-to-action in your pin descriptions.
  • Provide Value: Write descriptions that provide value to users, such as tips, insights, or benefits of the product or service you're promoting.

Leveraging Affiliate Links

Choose the Right Affiliate Programs

Selecting the right affiliate programs is essential for maximizing your earnings on Pinterest. Here are some factors to consider when choosing affiliate programs:

  • Relevance to Your Niche: Choose affiliate programs that offer products or services relevant to your niche and audience.
  • Commission Rates: Consider the commission rates offered by different programs. Higher commission rates can significantly increase your earnings.
  • Cookie Duration: Look for programs with longer cookie durations, as this increases the likelihood of earning commissions from repeat visits.

Common Misconceptions about Pinterest Affiliate Marketing

Misconception 1: No Blog Needed

Some believe you can make money on Pinterest with affiliate marketing without a blog. To create your own blog check this Ultimate Guide Start A WordPress Blog.

Misconception 2: Direct Linking to Affiliate Products

Others think you can make money by creating Pins and linking directly to affiliate products.

Neither of these strategies is likely to be profitable or sustainable.

Why These Approaches Don’t Work

The Technical Side

When you have a Pinterest business account, you can “claim” a website. This means Pinterest recognizes the site as yours, and all content pinned from it is tracked in your analytics.

Pinterest prioritizes content pinned from your claimed URL, so pinning from your own site almost always yields better results than pinning from another site. Affiliate links, in particular, don’t perform well on Pinterest.

Pinterest prefers to deliver high-value content to its users, not spammy affiliate links. Therefore, it tends to suppress affiliate links in favour of higher-value content like blog posts, galleries, and YouTube videos.

Audience Mindset

Understanding where your Pinterest user is in their sales journey is crucial. Pinterest users are typically in discovery mode, actively looking for ideas and inspiration. They may not be ready to make an immediate purchase but might save your Pins for later consideration.

Building a trusting and engaged community is essential for long-term success.

The Right Way to Make Money on Pinterest with Affiliate Marketing

As we talked about earlier, you need a website/blog to send your Pinterest audience to, and having a blog is really the best way to make money on Pinterest with affiliate links.

Instead of creating Pins that take readers straight to your affiliate products, you should make Pins to your blog posts, which offer valuable free material, and then include links to your different affiliate products within the post. Am I Right!!!

1. Understand Your Audience

Knowing your audience's interests, pain points, and questions helps you create content they seek. For example, if you run a style blog and want to promote Home Decor Items, you could create a post on “Must-Have Home Decor Items for a Cozy Living Room.”

2. Understand the Pinterest Audience

Pinterest users are in discovery mode, looking for ideas and inspiration. Meeting them with answers and inspiration builds the “like-know-trust” factor, which is crucial for affiliate sales. The sales process might be longer, but it rewards you with a growing, trusting audience.

3. Create High-Value Content

Create free content, typically blog posts, with links to your affiliate products. This helps build your audience’s trust in you. Providing valuable content encourages repeat visits and engagement.

4. Capture Your Audience for Repeat Visits

Build an audience that keeps returning to your site. Use strategies like building an email list and encouraging users to follow you on Pinterest, Instagram, TikTok, etc. Pinterest is a top-of-funnel marketing platform, so always encourage your Pinterest traffic to take the next step in the sales funnel.

5. Identify (and Lean into) Top-Performing Affiliate Sales

Monitor which products drive the most clicks and sales. Create more content around these products. For instance, if a certain brand performs well, create posts around that brand. You can also create a landing page with your top-performing affiliate posts, like a “Shop Our Faves” page.

Analyzing and Optimizing Performance

Track Key Metrics

Tracking key metrics is essential for understanding the performance of your Pinterest affiliate marketing efforts and making data-driven decisions. Here are some important metrics to monitor:

  • Impressions: The number of times your pins are seen by users.
  • Clicks: The number of times users click on your pins or affiliate links.
  • Saves: The number of times users save your pins to their boards.
  • Conversions: The number of sales or actions completed as a result of your affiliate links.

Optimize Based on Insights

Use the insights gained from tracking key metrics to optimize your Pinterest strategy. Here are some ways to optimize your performance:

  • Refine Your Pin Designs: Analyze which pin designs perform best and create more pins with similar styles and elements.
  • Adjust Your Pinning Schedule: Experiment with different pinning schedules to determine the optimal times for reaching your audience.
  • Test Different Affiliate Products: Promote a variety of affiliate products to see which ones resonate most with your audience and generate the highest conversions.

Making money on Pinterest with affiliate marketing is possible, but it requires the right strategy. Instead of relying on quick fixes, focus on creating valuable content, understanding your audience, and building a sustainable business. Done correctly, Pinterest can be an amazing long-term revenue stream.
